Who is Boujemaa

Boujemaa is the founder of the Riffian (North Moroccan) band Twatoun. Boujemaa started with Twatoun in the mid seventies and continues to this day on. It was not only music that Twatoun produced. Twatoun produced a message of faith and strength. It was this message and especially the feeling people had when listening to Twatoun that made the band populair in the seventies and the decades after. The popularity of Twatoun had a large personal consequence for Boujemaa. During the eighties Boujemaa was imprisoned for several years in a Moroccan prison because of the message in his music. In spite of his imprisonment Boujemaa continued with his music. Bringing strength and faith to people was not without a price. You could say that Boujemaa is the embodiment of strength and faith. In the nineties Boujemaa moved to Spain and to this day continues to live there. Twatoun had its revival when Boujemaa met with Abdelhak in Spain. Together they performed former Twatoun songs and produced new songs. There is one thing that has not changed and that is Twatouns message. To this day Twatoun brings faith and strength to people where there is none.

In 2009 Boujemaa was diagnosed with a severe illness. This shocked many people close to him and others who knew Twatoun’s music. Overcoming an illness is both a physical as well as a mental process. A person like Boujemaa, one that gave so much to others, deserves appreciation. We hope that by showing our appreciation for his life long commitment to music and the empowerment of young and older people, we can mentally contribute to his recovery.
